Flowers in Season: October

Incorporating seasonal favorites into your wedding or event is a great way to capture the beauty that nature has to offer each month

October brings cooler temps and we start to see a shift towards jewel tones and moodier hues as Halloween approaches. As we see the leaves change color, we love to add loads of texture to our designs to get in the fall spirit.

There are a few blooms that thrive as the temps drop and give one last hurrah before the first frost. We're sharing a few of our favorite stems to inspire your October nuptials and help you select some of the amazing offerings nature brings this time of year. Selecting in-season flowers will help to give your event a cohesive look and maximize your wedding flower budget.

Here are a few of our favorites:

leucodendron

Amaranthus

With variety names like "hot biscuits" and "love lies bleeding" we cannot help but pop a little amaranthus into our fall designs. Stems come in both upright and hanging varieties (think long, whimsical, draping strands) from burgundy to red, rust and green. Rather than blooming, the buds develop a fuzzy texture, perfect for infusing a woodland charm into autumnal arrangements.

Zinnia

Zinnias are a favorite of gardeners because of they're fast growing, abundant, and come in a variety of colors during the fall months. Traditional varities come in white, red, pink, orange, yellow, green and purple however thanks to breeders like Floret Flowers new colors like queen lime, precious metals, and zinderella add even more texture and color variation to a flower we already love. These blooms are best sourced from local farmers as they don't travel well from elsewhere.

Chrysanthemum

There's a reason it's called 'Mumtober' as chrysanthemums take over the entrance of every garden center, grocery store, and doorstep in the month of October. The mums generally seen en mass at the wholesaler or spray painted like tie dye at Costco have been treated like a four letter word as of late. However, growers are having a renaissance of heirloom mum varieties that are a must see. We love football mums for their giant heads, super long vase life and assortment of fall-friendly colors. A particular Fountainhead favorite is 'Linette' Cremon mums which come in a soft peachy-biege that plays well with everything and at a fraction of the price of similar dahlias.

Agonis

Agonis is the perfect foliage when we want to add a moody or even spooky element to an arrangement. Agonis branches add a kaleidoscope of burgundy and dull green to arrangements, ideal for autumnal palettes. Sweeping, curvaceous stems display slender leaves, highlighted and accented by gorgeous colors, and perfect for tucking into gaps. Other burgundy foliage we love this time of year include cotinus (smoke bush) and ninebark

Strawflower

As it's name says, these button-sized blooms feel like papery straw. This flower features gorgeous layers of petals and the heads stay just as beautiful even after the stems have dried out. We love incorporating these flowers in personal flowers including flower crowns, boutonnieres, and corsages and they come in fall-friendly shades of white, yellow, pink, apricot, and red
